The hand is a unique area of the human body that is made up of bone, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, skin, and blood vessels. These elements must all be in good working order for the hand to function well. The relationship between all these structures is delicate and refined. An injury or disease can affect any or all of these structures and impair the use of the hand leading to pain, stiffness and deformity.
The field of hand surgery deals with both surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems that may take place in the hand or upper extremity (commonly from the tip of the hand to the shoulder) including injury and infection. It is a team approach involving Orthopaedic surgeons and Plastic surgeons. Most disorders of the hand can be treated without surgery. They can be treated with non-surgical treatments such as injections, physiotherapy, taping, use of splints etc. But is case of injury, they often require surgical correction for good functional results.
